ep Le @ ~ Wednesday, March 11, 1998 — North Shore News north shore news MAIL BOX Dear Editor: I don’t live on Garden Avenue, but do live nearby, across Capilano Road, on Fullerton Avenue. And both our streets are affected at rush hours by the gridlock that backs up from the intersection of Capilano Road and Marine Drive. That Cap and Marine intersection is one of the worst and most confusing to drivers in all of the North Shore. One of the main points of confusion lies with the traffic lights. When traffic south- bound on Capilano Road onto Marine, or beyond it, gets a green ‘tight, that Hight shows two things: a green light, and a right-turn arrow. Too many drivers seem to have problems trying to make left turns on that green, or often seem to sit there, won- dering when they'll get a green arrow telling them to turn to the left. They never do get that arrow, because there isn't one. This means that too often, especially when there’s a lot of traffic coming northward on Capilano towards Marine, and on up Capilano Road, or mak- ing left turns at Marine, towards the bridge, the south- bound Capilano traffic in the left turn lane gets held back, to the point where only two or three vehicles may get through before the light changes. This frustrates the hell out of most of us, who already know that the only way to get through there on a left rurn is to literally take our lives in our hands. We also know that there have been many bad accidents there, because of such frustration. Hardly a week goes by in which the centre of that inter- section isn’t littered with frag- ments from an accident, So we often use Garden Avenue, which is safe, orderly, and has a much more normal intersection at Marine Drive. We aren’t intending to cause problems to anyone living on Garden — we're simply trying to preserve our vehicles and our sanity. Perhaps one solu- tion might be to install lights where Garden meets Capilano, and coordinate those with our lights at Fullerton and Capilano, so that we could avoid the grid- lock that clogs both. Another solution might be to improve that horrible intersection at Capilano and Marine, for cas- ier left turning when south- bound on Capilano Road. We don’t need a war, just some common sense. NV doctor lauded for emergency room work act saves family dog Dear Editor: This is an open Jetter to thank many people who assisted our dog, Tiamo, when she was hit by a car on Feb. 27, Steve, Fiona and the as-yet- -unknown neighbor who bundled Tiamo up and kept her warm and comforted her as vou took her to the emer- gency clinic by Granville Island, there are just no words to conv cy Our grat- itude, Your generous and unselfish act probably saved Tiamo’s life. Val, whom we never even met before our fran- tic search Friday evening and Saturday morning, your kindness in assisting in the search and your gift that you dropped off at our house for Tiamo are unbelievable. . To the person who hit her = on Inglewood Avenue, we don’t blame you for hitting her. We know it was an accident. However, it was a coward- ly and despicable thing to do to leave her lying unat- tended on the road. For that we cannot forgive you and trust that some- day you will have a pet of your own and will come to realize what a selfish and cruel thing you did. Due to one uncaring individual, we found many wonderful and kind neighbors. It’s a relief to know the “good guys” are still around. The Thompson Family West Vancouver thompsov@radiant.net Dear Editor: The News carried a Feb. 22 story about an elderly gentleman who had been refused admittance to the emergency room at Lions Gate Hospital and Dr. Warner is mentioned as the physician on duty at the time. I had to call an ambulance to take my husband to the emer- gency room at Lions Gate Hospital one night a couple of years ago. My husband had symptoms of a stroke. Dr. Warner was also me hysician in charge that night. I can’t think of anyone more rofessional, efficient, kind and concerned than Dr. Warner. Not only did he give my husband the best of medical attention, Dr. Warner, realizing that I was upset, made sure that [ knew and understood what treatment was being administered to him. My husband had to have open-heart surgery a few days later and I ‘feel very strongly that Dr. Warner’s initial treatment of him in the emergency room played a big part in my husband’s suffer- ing no ill effects from the whole ordeal. As for the Burnaby gentleman: The News reports, “Dr. Warner refused admittance to the elderly man because he lived and was injured in Burnaby.” 1 find ir impossible to believe that avy doctor would send a patient away merely for those reasons, and f am sure Dr. Warner found it to be in this patient’s best interest to “be reated and to recuperate in a hospital in Burnaby where he lives and where he presumably has his family and his family doe- tor. It may be extremely stressful to be the physician in charge of an emergency room; he has to make fast life and death decisions. My personal impression of Dr. Warner is that he is very capable of making the right decisions. } would sooner rely on the judgment of the emergency room physician, rather than the ambulance attendant, as to what is in the best interest of the patient.
