Park & Tilford set for season By Layne Christensen Community Reporter THE gardens at Park and Tilford are aglow with Christmas lights and the sounds of the season. Park and Tilford tripped the switch for its 30,000- bulb light display last Saturday. The festive display has been a North Shore tradition since °69 when the gardens were a part of Park & Tilford Distillery. When the distillery was sold in 81 to make way for North Shore Studios and Park & Tilforn Shopping Centre, they sat vacant until 87) ~—when ss they ~—s were redesigned. In *89, Morgward Investments resumed the tradition. The gardens, which are fully privately funded by the merchants of the shop ing centre, are open daily 9:30 a.m until 9:30 p.m. Admission is free. Garden director Todd Major likes to improvise with the festive decorations each year, One recent addition to the season lights display is the “star” that tops the garden’s centrepiece, a 60-foot Dawn redwood. Major calls the gaudy tree- topper a “super bright rotating airport light” and it has become a running joke with the workers who install the lights and regular visitors to the garden. “Up until. that we were subtle ~ — very refined and not oo Las Vegas-y,” said Major, who plans to retire the bright orange beacon in January ~and replace it with something different next season. -. Park & Tilford’s Christmas lights are displayed every day at dusk till 9. :30 p.m. through New Years Day. The gardens will be closed Christmas Day.
