( asked the Minister of Immigration, The Hon. Sergio Marchi, if ho could tell Canadians why he refuses to act on the majority wish for lower immigration lev- els and | quoted the results of a recent pall in the Province newspaper which indicated that 97% of those who responded fell that immigration levels arg too high. Mr. Marchi gave his standard reply that immigrants are ret contributors to Canada. He has implied in the past that Reform PMs are narrow-minded and possibly even racist. THE PLAN FOR 1994 Mr. Marchi recently released his immigration Plan for 1994. The immi- gration target of 250,000 for the year is 100.000 more than Reform believes our economy can suppor at this time. There will be 111,009 in the family feunilication class, an increase of 1,300 from last year and 45% of the total. The number of independent immigrants selected mainly for their skill levels rises to 86,700, an increase of almest 10,000 but still only 35%. We congratt- lated the government for increasing this class albeit-due to a reduction in the business related class. Reform believes that the bulk of immigration should be based cn the skills we need to help Canada prosper, not on any particutar racial group or country of origin. : REFUGEE WORK PERMITS Mr. Marchi also announced a plan ” to grant work permits to refugees say- ing that it would reduce welfare costs and allow better monitoring of. appli- cants. To get a work permit the appli- cant must agree to.a medical exam and to be fingerprinted and photographed. The permits are valid for nine months or until the hearing is completed, whichev- er comes first. a. The Government argues that earlier: detection of criminal records, and the protection of the heaith of Canadians will be additional benefits of the work _ permit scheme. |-have the feeling that the majority of you probably feel that fingerprinting, photographing, a medical exam and a police check should take place at the port of entry for all refugees.
