HILE GODFATHERS and goodfellas swiped all
the press last year, Joel and Ethan Coen made a

quiet hit with their own mobster movie. Trouble

is, it was too quiet.

Critics liked it, but the audience,
as mogu! Sam Goldwyn said,
“stayed home in droves.’ So,
now you can see what the fuss
was from the comfort of your own
Lazyboy.

The convoluted olst centres on,
Tom Reagan (Gabliel Byrne), a*~
tough, neariy heartless advisor to
the town’s controlling hood, Leo
(Albert Finney). The Irish are
despised by the Italians led by
gravel-vciced Johnny Caspar (Jon
Polito) and a takeover is ripe.

The action heats up as Tom fails
for his boss’ woman, Verna (Mar-
cia Gay Harden) whose brother,
Bernie (ohr Turturro) is embezzl-
ing from Johnny. Tom leaves Leo,

it was convoluted.

However plot-heavy Miller's
Crossing gets, the catchy slang.
black-humored periormances and
4 sea of snap-brimmed fedoras,
always fires the senses. It almost
gives crime a good name.

mined by an embittered British of-
ficer (lack Hawkins) forced into
retirement. Not wanting to waste
his talents, he blackmails a group
of ex-military men into carrying
out a daring bank robhery.

The suspense during the heist is
almost as good as the droli wit that
precedes it, thanks to Bryan
Forbes’ ingenious script. (Forbes
later heiped create the cult T.V.
favorite, The Avengers.)
