They are specially design- ed to keep you out of trou- ble with the law, save you some money, and perhaps even save your life. AutoTopic Ken Hardie ] INSURANCE CORPORATION OF BRITISH CORUMBIA 1. Resolve to pay atten- tion to your driviag. Staying out of trouble in traffic is a full-time job. Heavy traffic is unforgiving to those who let their atten- tion wander to other matters while their vehicles are hurti- ing along at dozens of meters per second. 2. Resolve to approach in- tersections with care. Most injury accidents take place at intersections and it takes 2 concerted effort to avoid problems. Ease up on the gas as you approach an intersection ... even if the light is green or if you have the right-of-way. 3. Resolve to buckle up, all the time, every time. People who tell us they don’t wear their safety belts if it’s ‘‘just five minutes to the store,’” wouldn't dream of leaving their homes unlocked during that same wip. Yet their chances of suffering serious injuries in a traffic accident are significantly greater than the risk of being robbed. Think of it this way ... if your VCR is worth protec- ting, so is your head. Ditto for your passengers, especially children, who need to be secured in a properly- installed infant or child restraint. 4. Resolve to expect the unexpected. You can’t count on the other guy to signal or even look before changing lanes. 8 ite . . You can’t guarantee that he or she won't try to beat the signal lights. When it comes right down to it, you can’t trust anyone to act rationally behind the wheel all of the time. 5. Resolve to give (wo other motorists a break every day. Sure, you're just as busy as the next person, but a few seconds to let another motorist into traffic or change lanes safely could Prevent an accident. Courtesy has a ‘“‘ripple’’ effect. Your good deed could impress the other motorist so much that he or she just might give someone else a break. What a con- cept! Just think, if we all kept ‘these five simple resolutions we could reverse the accident trends, prevent injuries and fatalities and save a ict of money too.
