35 - Wednesday, December 27, 1989 - North Shore News SPORTS Gordon dives into springboard 2nd piace PAIGE GORDON sprung into the Commonwealth Games diving team after completing her most troublesome dive — a one-and-a- half backwards pike — on the last day of the four-day competition in Edmonton. This dive earned Gordon second place in the one-metre springboard event and a spot on the five- member team. She will be the only female Canadian diver to compete in all three events — the spr- ingboard, the three-metre and 10-metre tower. A West Vancouver resident in grade 11 at Kitsilano Secondary School, Gordon is also the youngest woman diver on the team by about four years. Megan Gordon, Paige's sister, was also vying for a slot on the team but missed her difficult front three-and-a-half on the 10-metre tower in both the preliminaries and the finals, nnishing sixth in her best event. Paige finished fourth in both the three-metre and 10-metre. Also in the Commonwealth Games is North Vancouver’s Allison Sydor, already in Tasmania to train. Flames win HAT TRICKS by Dave Shepard and Brad Costa paced the scoring as the North Shore Winter Club Flames posted their first win on the road this season with an 11-4 bashing of the Steelers in a West Coast Junior Hockey League game played Dec. 17 at Grandview. The Flames built up a 6-1 lead in the first period, stretched their lead to 10-2 after two, and then were outscored by the Steelers two goals to one for the 11-4 final. Scoring star for the Flames Sunday was Shepard who picked up four points with three goals and an assist. Shepard’s hat-trick goal was scored while the Flames were playing a man short, late in the se- cond period. Single goals were added by Brian Lee, Rob Tournier, John Cox, Rich Haldane and Marcel! Desjar- din, whose goal also scored while the Flames were playing short- handed. Flame goaltender Kevin Rad- bourne made 32 stops on Steeler shooters who had a 36-32 edge in shots on goal.
