| BCNU contract talks reopen ) CONTRACT talks between the Hospital Labor Relations Associa- tion and the B.C. Nurses’ Union were scheduled to reconvene over the weekend. Mediator John Kinzie announced late Thursday that both sides | in the dispute had requested the mediation process be reopened. Kinzie subsequently asked both sides to meet at 6 p.m. Friday. BCNU members have been on strike at Lions Gate Hospital since June 14. Members of the Hospitaf Employees Union went on strike against the hospital on Thursday. Vehicle roadbiock nets offenders THE NORTH Vancouver RCMP traffic section cracked down on commercial vehicle violations June 13 by conducting an all-day commercial vehicle inspection roadblock. The roadblock was manned by police, motor vehicle inspectors, motor carrier inspectors and gas safety branch inspectors. A total of 286 commercial vehicles were inspected and 52 charges were laid, Nine vehicles were grounded until on-scene repairs or adjustments were made. Four vehicles were pulled off the road for being defective. Shredded money -puzzies police NORTH VANCOUVER RCMP investigators are puzziing over the recent discovery of a large quantity of shredded paper money in the Maplewood area. Confetti-sized pieces of money of various denominations were discovered in the 100-biock of Amberst Avenue on two occasions during the past few weeks. Dog helps police find bicycles WEST VANCOUVER Police recovered four stolen mountain bikes, worth approximately $3,000, early Tuesday morning while investigating a mischief complaint in the 200-block of Paitsmauk Road. Police dog Trooper tracked east across the street, through a yard, across Whonoak Road and into a bush area where two mountain bikes were found hidden. The dog continued west through several backyards, back to Paitsmauk and continued tracking to a second bush area where two more mountain bikes were found. Trooper continued west down a trail to Rivers Drive and to the front door of a house in the 200-block of Lawa Road. Police couldn’t find anyone at the house 2ad returned, along with North | Vancouver RCMP, to a house in the 200-block of Paitsmauk. Two suspects were questioned aad arrested by North Vancouver RCMP in connection with a break and enter which had occurred the day before in North Vancouver. Two charged with theft THEFT and possession of stolen property charges have been laid against two people stopped by West Vancouver Police Monday. Potice were advised by Squamish RCMP to be on the look-out for a 1976 Ford Granada and two occupants, following the theft of hundreds of dollars worth of cigarettes and a purse from a Squamish Overwaitea store earlier Monday morning. A car fitting the description was spotted and pulled over in the 3000-block of Marine Drive. Charged with two counts of theft under $1,000 and possession of stolen property are Allan Lawrence Lanctot, 37, of New Westminster, and 18-year-old Vanessa Renee Moody, of no fixed address. Lawson family contributes to house restoration ON BEHALF of the Lawson fami- ly, Gertude Wilson has donated $100,000 to West Vancouver District to go towards the restora- tion of the Gertrude Lawson house. Recently purchased by the municipality for $1.2 million, the house is approximately 50 years old, but has the added significance of having been built by Wilson’s aunt, Gertrude Lawson, the daughter of ‘‘The Father of West Vancouver’’ John Lawson, and a tremarkable woman in her own right. Miss Lawson became the first B.C. woman to acquire a mortgage in order to build the house, which was constructed out of ship’s ballast stones stockpiled by her fa- ther.
