From what I’ve heard, the key with Club Med is to. choose a loca- tion (and there are many!) that suits. the type of. lifestyle you are comfortable with... 0 7. One reader, anxious to savor the history and culture of Mexico, ar- rived at a location and found the place full of swinging (young) singles with limited ambition. Other than volleyball you ‘can probably figure out the rest. Some Club Med destinations are family oriented, others attract couples. - . For singles, the most annoying part of travel. is a price increase known as the ‘“‘single supple- ment,” added-on to the prices in resorts and on ships for the privi- lege of having a room of your own, en ; The news item that caught my eye is the removal of ‘‘single sup- plements”. from four Club Med villages: Caravelle on Guadeloupe; Sonora Bay, Playa Blanca and Huatulco, in Mexico. I have no way of knowing what goes on after the visitor arrives in any of these destinations, but if singles are being encouraged it’s likely that you won’t be mobbed by rug rats. The prices are in effect until December, space available. Ask around -among friends in your particular age group and in- terest level and bounce it off the Club Med toll-free line (1-800- 268-1160). ; nat Incidentally, before you phone any place in North America for in- formation, particularly for travel reservations, call 1-800-555-1212, the information line for toll-free numbers. . J have been told, on occasion, that the number they have listed cannot be reached from Canada. That is often true, but try it any- way. : . ' During June, if you fly British Airways, you can save $800 per couple on a one-way ticket (two ” travelwise H Barbera McCreadie days, one night, five countries, black-tie dinner). : It’s still not going to be EI- Cheapo, but $800 is quite a saving. - Here again, it’s something I haven’t done but would like to, despite the report from a friend who made the trip that the old thing rocks - ard rolls like a demented teenager at a concert. They’re in the midst of a four-year program to update and revise every destina- tion and that shouldn’t be an item where travel information is con- cermed. Things change so rapidly in this business that I hesitate to recom- mend a restaurant a week after eating there. However, I had always wondered where an outfit such as Fodor’s gleaned their information. A few months ago, I had the pleasure of travelling with one of their researchers during a trip to Scandinavia. If the rest of them are as thorough as she was, and as knowledgeable about the gi eC mechanics of travel, give a thought who wanted to know if she should to scanning one. It’s prom- ised for an October completion date with the first ferry due in the fisst week of October. It probably won’t be as much use to us until next spring — TPH happily pass on a winier visit to Alaska but keep it in mind as an alternative to cruising on one of the many liners plying the coast in summer ’90, If you want an interesting day trip, Fairhaven is a good choice ~ just south of Bellingham on I-5. The advent of the ferry has seemed to give this historic community a shot of adrenalin. gate This next bit may be of limited interest but are you a stamp collec- tor? Canada’ Post just sent me a bulletin that Western Canada’s largest stamp show is being held in Edmonton, June 23-24-25, at the Coast Terrace Inn and that it will include a major stamp launch, June 23 (a Canadian photography commemorative stamp). Ordinarily, I'd have chucked this in the round file but the news release made me laugh. Right near the top, in bold black print, encouraging us to visit “Sunny Edmonton ...where your dollar goes further, gas is cheaper and WE HAVE NO SALES TAX!” How about that? Fancy any- thing related to our beloved gov- ernment hooting about no taxes? Be sure to double-check the dates — if they are working on the same schedule as our mail delivery they might get started a week or so late. . eke Most readers’ letters are an- swered more quickly if you include a telephone number.
