SPORTS —_———— Fastball season Starts with a bang THE NORTH Shore men’s fastball league opening tournament finished off with an exciting final game with the B.C. janior 19 and ander team defeating Pemberton Station 2-1, Both teams went undefeated on their sides of the tournament draw. In the final game, Pemberton Station’s Tom Rodrigues pitched well enough to win, but was unable to get the offensive support he needed. Other game highlights included Malcolm Nemana of the Tugs hit- ting the longest home run ever at Mahon Park. Dan Calli of Lynnwood Inn hit two home runs in a losing cause, as Tugs defeated Lynnwood 8-4, Pemberton Station’s Terry Kwasnycia continued home from third base, (stepping between um- pire Colin Thompson and Bowen Island catcher Barrie Penman who were embroiled in an argument over whether batter Bob Menzies had stepped out of the batter’s box while getting a base hit), on to home plate for the winning run of the game. Regular season play begins May 1 with doublehcaders Monday through Friday. Referee clinic set THE B.C. Soccer Association will hold a basic senior referee’s clinic for aspiring soccer referees, April 28, 29 and 30 at the B.C.S.A. of- fices at 6255 McKay Avenue, Bur- naby. The successful completion of the clinic will qualify the participant as an interim ciass-three soccer teferee. Yhose who qualify from the course will be eligible to regis- ter with the B.C. Soccer Referees’ Association. The registration fee for the weekend clinic is $35, which in- cludes the cost of a course training package and all materials. Pre-registration is necessary. The first session commences at 7 p.m., Friday, April 28th and runs all day Saturday and Sunday, April 29th and 30th. Registrations will be accepted up to Friday, April 21st. Flicka gymnasts succeed NORTH VANCOUVER’S Flicka Gymnastic Club came out on top at the Western Gymnastics cham- pionships in Regina held April 14 to 16. Jody Jacques placed first ail- around for the nevice women’s category, scoring first on vault and bars, second on beam and third on floor, : Aparna Ray , also from Flicka, placed fifth overall, with third on bars, fourth on beam and fifth 02 floor. In the Tyro division, Briony Lecky placed fifth all-around with Joey Amey second on bars, fourth on beam and floor. Jenny Campbell, meanwhile, came seventh ail- around, In the Argo division, Lisa Nakano placed fourth all-around, ~ i while Daphne O’Young from Flicka placed sixth all-around. In the open division, Jolene Fair- brother placed second all-around. On May 16, six gymnasts from Flicka and their coaches Flavia Toma and Janice Roddie will fly to Edmonton to compete in the Ca- nadian National Gymnastics championships. How?
