TREE TRUNK MAY BE BURNED

Consideration needed
betore replanting tree

IS IT necessary to replant a tree
facing the same compass direction
as when it was dug from its origi-
nal site?

Opinions about this replanting
procedure differ greatly.

When selecting a tree which has
grown in the wild for transplanting
into the garden or yard, the tree
may have branches on one side on-
ly as a result of being shaded on
one side. When this is the case, it is
very important to replant the tree
in such fashion that the side with
the most branches receives the
most sunlight.

the sudden exposure to sunlight
and possibly the tree's death. If the
tree comes from a very sheltered
area and has no lower branches at
all, it is wise to wrap the trunk in
burlap to protect it from the sun.

It certainly won't hurt to plant a
tree facir:; the same compass
direction as where it was first
growing. Many nurseries will at-
iach a ribbon to the trees which
they sell, often indicating the south
side of the tree when it was dug
from its original growing site.

It certainly takes little effort
from us to orient the tree in the

A final note: the older the tree,
the harder it is to successfully
transplant. Older trees need more
pampering when being
transplanted than young trees
because the disturbance to their
foot system tends to de much
greater.
