mayor and aldermen have recom-
mended the new anti-smoking
bylaw being drafted for the city
should be patterned after similar
bylaws in other cities.

The bylaw will include public
Places as well as the workplace,
council said.

In Vancouver, the city's smok-
ing bylaw took effect Dec. 1 and
city health officials say acceptance
of non-smoking rules has been
surprisingly smooth.

Under the new Vancouver
bylaw, smoking is restricted to des-
ignated areas.

Prior to initial reading of the
North Vancouver bylaw, the medi-
cal health officer, the RCMP and
various merchants’ groups will be
asked for comments.

Council is scheduled to consider
the recommendation at the Jan. 19
meeting.

8 p.m., in future.

Council approved a bylaw
amendment at its Jan. 5 meeting,
which allows for an earlier starting
time. This is to accommodate new
Mayor Don Lanskail’s desire to
precede council meetings with a
short public question period.
