Connell, 21, recently reached a career-high international ranking of 202ad by winning the Belgian Satellite Circuit. Michibata, the 1981-82 Cana- dian champion and Tennis Canada’s male player of the year in 1983 and 1985, and Wostenholme, named the top Ca- nadian player in 1984, have five and six years’ experience in Davis Cup competition, respectively. Sznajder was a reserve team member in the American Zone second-round playoff last March in Santiago, Chile before going on to capture the five-week Circuit Molson Canadian Satellite and the men's singles crown at the Sun Life Nationals in July. Sznajder, named Tennis Canada’s most im- proved male player. for 1985, is currently the highest-ranked Ca- nadian on the Association of Ten- nis Professionals (ATP) world computer at No. 134, He rose as high as 121st in Oct. after making the quarter-finals of a Grand Prix event in Tel Aviv, Israel. The four-member Davis Cup team that will represent Canada in the American Zone first-round playoff Jan. 30 to Feb. 1 in Caracas, Venezucla, will be selected from among the squad nominees before the year’s end. Should Canada defeat Venezuela, the Davis Cup team would meet Peru in the American Zone second-round playoff in Lima, March 13 to 15. A victory there would send Canada home to play the American Zone semi-finals, July 24 to 26, at a site still to be deter- mined. The American Zone fina! is scheduled for Oct. 2 to 4, 1987.
