Diatomite filters require a
‘‘precoat’’ of diatomite
filter aid on the filter
screen. Actual filtration
takes place through this
precoat. When the proper
amount of precoat is used,
the precoat will be about
1/16 inch thick.

Care should be taken to
follow the recommenda-
tions of the filter manufac-
turer regarding the proper
amount of filter powder to
use.
