BiS - Wednesday, August 8, 1984 - North Shore News THE PACIFIC National Exhibition is gearing up once more for the ‘‘World’s Largest Demolition Derby’”’ It starts Saturday, Aug. 18, and goes for 17 days straight with a total of 38 shows and over 100 events. Capacity crowds in the stands for the past 12 years has meant an average of a quarter million people. — The show is organized by Vancouver’s Satellites Motorsport Club who will register 150 drivers to take part in the various events. They will go through about 400 cars on their way to a whole lot of fun and perhaps the prized championship. Trucking highway THERE HAS been an estimated 17 per cent reduction in preventable accidents on_ selected highway routes in B.C. which were the focus of a year-long trucking in- dustry safety campaign. The Northwest Alliance of Fleet Supervisors also reported that the Commercial Accident Prevention P:rogram (CAPP) also con- tributed to a 29.4 per cent overall decrease in preven- table accidents in the three jurisdictions which par- ticipated in the campaign - Washington, Oregon and British Columbia. The program was launched to educate and assist trucking companies and the motoring public with the reduced risks associated with the five leading causes of preventable All the regular proven Demolition Derby events will be on the schedule as well as some new novel ideas. A truck championship event will be held for the first time on Sunday, Aug. 19, at 2 p-m. A dozen people have already been confirmed as drivers. The ladies Powder Puff events this year include an ‘‘open competition’’ and has over $1,000 set aside as prize money. There is the ‘‘Best appear- ing Contests’? where the tor mayhem. crowd picks out the nicest cars. Most have been in custom car shows and shopp- ing centre displays. On Fri- day night, Aug. 24, at 8:30 p.m. there is a new contest. Each car will have three painters and fifteen minutes to decorate their cars. The crowd again will pick the winner. The small imports and domestic cars that are so popular now on the street are part of the Pacific National Exhibition action centre as well. Oval track racing, figure-8 racing and the grand finale demolition derbies will please the crowd. During the CAPP cam- paign approximately 300,000 handouts were distributed to northwest carriers high- lighting the causes of p;reventable accidents.
