NORTH VANCOUVER School Board’s 1984 budget — that contains the provisions for cutting more than 150 teaching and non-teaching positions — has been approved. By JOANNE MACDONALD But ‘‘major cuts and changes” might still come about this. year because of a conflict between the deadline for approving the budget and last-minute changes in Ministry of Education budget limits and a new budgeting format. The board had to approve its $58,940,686 budget by Feb. 15 to meet Ministry rules. Because of the changing rules, however, several of the . items contained in the budget ee are subject to revision throughout the year, pro- mpting several trustees to wom more cuts may be coming. -Under.the budget, 74 full- time teaching positions will disappear at the end of June and a further 87 support staff positions are expected to be lopped at the end of this school year. The board has tightened its spending in other areas as well, and took a further step toward economy when it ap- proved a motion proposed by Dr. Ross Regan Tuesday that ore cuts may come despite budget okay trustees give up 10 per cent of their annual stipend. That money — $28,000 — will be applied to the portion of the budget for instruction costs for students from kindergarten to grade seven. Regan and trustee Marge Goodman also argued against passing the budget as it stood because they felt costs had not been cut cnough. Goodman argued unsuc- cessfully that administrative costs should have been cut more and Regan urged the board to cut salaries more to save jobs and to make cuts in such a way that they would not affect classroom size.
