That was the consensus of two members of the North Vancouver branch of the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver this week, when asked to comment on what the new government means to the housing industry in terms of the marketplace and the creation of new housing Starts. Harold Dick of Royal Trust says stability in mor- tgage rates and the inflation rate will solve many of the housing market problems. Ron Inns of Block Brothers goes further, ad- ding that that stability is the only answer. “We're hoping for some reasonable stability in inter- est rates,’’ says Dick. ‘“‘There have been tremen- dous fluctations over the past several years from a low of about 10 per cent to a high of 21 to the point we are at now where the interest rates are relatively palatable. ‘‘Hopefully we will get out of the age of artificial inter- est rates and the rate will get on to some plateau.’’ Once that happens, Dick says, the confidence of both developers and buyers will By MARK HAMILTON return. ‘This, along with a hopefully more stable rate of inflation, is what we need,’’ Dick adds. ‘‘We need more confidence in government and government programs and stability that we can count on.”’ As for specific items, Dick lists three — a return to the mortgage interest rate deduc- tability program proposed by the Joe Clark gov- ernment, entrenchment of property rights in the Con- stitution and an end to gov- ernment subsidies for hous- ing. ‘*We have to look at sub- sidizing groups and. in- dividuals and not the hous- ing itself,’’ he says.
