RECORDS FALL A RECORD breaking performance by Dave Wilkinson of Handsworth was perhaps the biggest factor in the North Shore high school's win at the B.C. high school track and field championships at Swangard Stadium Saturday. Wilkinson sliced .2 seconds off the old Canadian scholastic record for the 100 metre hurdles, flashing past the finish line in a mere 14.2 seconds. The Handsworth athlete competed in a total of 10 events, and his outstanding performance netted him the rare double honour of top male athlete and most in- spirational athlete to his team. The grade 11 student still has one more year to work on toppling even more records, a fact that has coach Terry Hooge happy. Handsworth easily out- distanced Burnaby Central for the provincial utle, a change from last year when the two powerhouses settled for a tie. The North Van school earned 138 points, well ahead of Burnaby’s 105. Fraser Valley's Centennial Handsworth No. 1 in B.C. finished a close third with 93 points. Handsworth had the top girls team, with an aggregate total of 65, and the second best boys squad, which earned 71 points, just short of Central's 77. The other “H” in the North Shore's top track twosome, Hillside, finished sixth — a strong placing for a school whose strength lies mainly in junior athletes. (The B.C. championships, while not limited to any age group, features mostly senior category athletes.) Handsworth had several other first place finishes in the two day meet. The girl's 4x100m relay team of Elaine Prescott, Diane Ford, Sue Bromley and Jill Fargey captured the blue ribbon in their event with a time of 50.9. And Andrew Dawson was the fastest boy in B.C. in the 400m, taking the tape in 48.9 seconds. Top female athlete was declared to be Mount Douglas’ middle distance runner Trish Wellman, who CONTINUED ON PAGE B3 Lynnwood starts with a win FAST-PACKED action was the name of the game as the Lynnwood Ladies started off the lacrosse season last week with a 8-4 win over Coquitlam.
