C2 - Sunday, April 11, 1982 - North Shore News Beware of wood smoke One of the nicer homey touches that energy con- servafionists have brought to our society is the return of the wood stove and ef- ficiency fireplaces. They not only look good and feel good, but they smell good. Now, it seems, that good old-fashioned outdoorsy smell] may be deceiving. From North Carolina, Robert Stevens, a scientist at the U.S. Environmental Pro- tection Agency laboratory, reports that in some city suburbs as much as 25 per cent of the airborne particles are ffom woodsmoke in the evenings and on weekends. These particles can get into lung tissues and make people more prone to diseases like asthma, bron- chitis and emphysema. In addition, smoke from wood burned at low temperatures (as in wood stoves with the air supply cut down to make the fire last longer) contains at least six chemicals that are known to induce cancer in animals. Sales of wood stoves will probably exceed two milhon units in Canada and the U.S. this year. Despite the nice, old fashioned qualities they add to our way of life, they may be on their way to becoming a more serious threat to public health and anyone realized. You have, in your own words, “blown it.” With the chocolate cake riding your fork and willpower, your diet is but a distant memory. That elusive state of “thin” seems but a misty dream. Under the circumstances, how will you ever find the courage to begin again? The first step is to analyze why we tend to -undermine our own efforts to lose weight. After all, we'd find it mighty odd if an engineer spent weeks constructing bridges only to blow them up in a fit of frenzy one restless night. We'd never allow a surgeon to remove our appendix if we thought he was going to put it back in again when a contrary mood hit him. Yet we work duti- fully for weeks and months at a weight loss program, only to undo our hard work in a few days of uncontrolled eating. Why? One possible reason is that deep down inside, we may not feel we “deserve” to be thin. Everyone carries with him a certain amount of guilt, but for some, whose self-esteem is low, it becomes an_ unbearable burden. So they “punish” them- selves by strict dieting and then periodic overeating. “Punish themselves by over- eating?” you say. “Some punishment!” Yet think about it.
