Shedding silly biases

QUESTION: I used to be a
square, back in the days
when “square’ was the right
word for what I was! 1 was
quite impressed by what was
“proper” and “acceptable” in
polite society and did my
best to fit in to all the current
requirements. In 1968, I
was 17 and doing everything
I was “supposed” to be
doing. I went to the right
schools and the right church
and my family (and ID
belonged to the right clubs
and shopped at the right
stores. Do you picture me?

My parents had steered
me into this attitude and, of
course, they gave me prond
support in it. I see mow that
during that time, I was
hewing to the line of others,
while, in myself, I was a
straight, phoney, nothing.
But I did not realize it for
nearly ten years! A little over
three years ago I met again a
friend of former years, who,
like me, in those days was
every bit as uptight and
proper as I was. She had
been as close to me as
people could get in my cold
and snobbish days and |
liked her immensely. So, you
can imagine my surprise in
