City council decided, in the words ‘of Alderman Gary Payne, that “the law must apply equally to everyone”, and voted to support a Cify bylaw prohibiting front yard driveways for houses that don’t have garages or car- ports. Loma Fedorowski has been using a driveway in front of her house at 2567 Western Avenue for the past 14 years, ever since she moved into it in 1967. But now the City is carrying out street im- provements and laying a new sidewalk -—- which will continue uninterrupted right in front of her driveway. If she wants to park off the street she will have to make another driveway at the back of her house. CAN'T AFFORD But she can’t afford it, says her daughter, who told City council that her mother “is an old age pensioner who can’t afford the expense of putting in another drive-way in her back yard when she already has one in the front.” The City’s decision was delayed after the issue came up at a previous meeting. Led by Aldermen Stella Jo Dean and Frank Marcino who were sympathetic to Fedorowski’s plight, City council voted to look into previous bylaws first before coming to a final decision. But there was no way the driveway could be allowed without breaking the City bylaws, Director of Development and Licensing Services Frank Morris told council. “You've got to either change the bylaw or enforce it,” Morris told council, Alderman Billi Sorenson voted agaist enforcement of the bylaw. Aidermen Frank Marcino and Stella Jo Dean were not at ilast Monday's council meeting.
