. How many. kids do. you: want? FROM PAGE A14 couple has one child and the debate over a second one begins. It is very important for them to weigh the pros and -cons fairly, ‘to ‘listen: carefully to each other's feelings and to be aware.of social pressures, so that they - may be kept in their. proper place. s “One child by choice” is a discussion group offered .by North Shore Family Services for people presently engaged in the decision-making around having a_ second child. The group will meet. four Wednesday evenings at Highiands Community School in North Vancouver beginning February 11. The series will be led by Nelleme Fabbro and Dennis Josey, a married couple who have grappled with making this difficult decision themselves and know now that for the present, at least one child is enough for them. “We are aware of the struggle and the many factors to consider”, says Nelleme. Are only children spoiled? What are the facts, and what are the myths? This group will provide an opportunity for couples to look at how being alone affects the child himself and also to explore their own attitudes, tem- perments, values — all of which are important in decision-making. The issues of whether or not to have a child at all is - anather confronting many couples in our community. A “Baby — maybe” group is under consideration. Please let North Shore Family Services know if you would be interested. Call 988-7128 for more information or to register for “One Child by Choice” or to express interest in “Baby — Maybe”. All enquiries are welcome. Maybe it's time you jumped into somethin more demanding than a car pool. ARSON Pree e j * AlS= Weinesday, February 4, 1981 - North Shore News “KEYS TO NEW VAN for the North Vancouver Salvation Army ¥ were presented recently to Captain Ken“Chapman (shaking hands, left) by Vern Schoth, president; of theNorth Van Lions Gate Rotary Club — Course on ‘chi At any moment parents and childminders, especially those with young children, can have a (first aid emergency on their hands. Most first aid courses, however, are not geared to treating children, so Capilano College has developed: a new course called “First Aid for Parents of -Young Children” to provide information and first _aid techniques. Children get sick, of course, but that’s just the beginning. Two. and three year olds, particularly, are imaginative and adventurous and a house is full of won- ‘ derful objects. If it’s even remotely possible, they'll climb it, fall over it, fall off it, fall into it, get their fingers (or toes or tongue or | hair or ...) stuck in it, or best of all, swallow it, with results ranging from bruises and scrapes to serious injuries, cuts, burns and poisoning. In the College’s first .aid course childminders will be taught the procedures to deal with emergencies both inside and outside the home: but more importantly, they will be faught an awareness of potential problems — how to recognize and prevent them. — A qualified St. John’s First $1,000 CHEQUE for the Kinsmen Rehabilitation Fund was presented last week to Ed Sherwood (left), smen executive director, by Don Marsh (right) on behalf of the North Van Community Players.
