Sea tragedy IT US highly unlikely thet the method used by a tugboat to transport a barge that struck a converted fish-packing boal, killing four, was to blame for the accident, the president of the North Vancouver company that built the tug said Thursday. The 32-metce (105-fcot) tug Arctic Taglus was pushing aw 82-metre (249-fo0t) barge carrying 17 truck. trailers near Active Pass at about 2:45 a.m. on Wednesday, July 21. The barge struck the fish-packing boat Bona Vista. The boat rolled over, trapping its six occupants. -Foeur died in the accident. Two others are listed in critica] condition in hospital. The Arctic Tagius was built in 1976 by Allied Ship- buiiders Lid., in North Vancouver. Allied president Arthur McLaren said the huge tug pushes barges rather than towing them. “This method is used ali over the world, You can get better control of the barge and have better steering by pushing it. The only reason you wouldn't push a barge is because of bad weather,” said McLaren. “E don’t think that (pushing the barge) had anything todo with it (accident}.”” ; *. He. sald the Arctic Taglus is three decks high at the :. wheelhouse, allowing its crew to see over any barge it pushes, McLaren said the tug was built for Arctic Transporta- thom and was used to tow rocks for the construction of. small islands in-the Beaufort Sea. It was brought to the Lower Mainland about two years ago. - Man jailed | A RICHMOND man was’ jailed one day and fined a total. of $600 in connection with charges of marijuana - and cocaine trafficking. . . - Raymond Garfield McPherson, 33, was found guilty of both charges stemming from incidents thet occorred March 6, 1991, and March 15, 1991, in North Vancouver - District... : Judge: ‘Reginald Grandison sentenced McPherson in North Vencouver provincial court on Friday, June 11.
