You can do your own
upkeep by applying a
paste of baking soda
and water on the ter-
minals and wiping
clean. Finish with a
thin coat_of Vaseline
to keep the terminals
free of corrosion.

In an emergency

If you do get stranded this
winter, be prepared. Know
how to change your tire and
make sure your spare is inflated
to the correct: pressure, and
thar the jack ete. is in the trunk.

Consider outting anti-seize
compound on the bolts or
studs to make it easier to
remove the wheel in cold
weather.

Other essentials to keep on
hand: flashlight, small shovel,
blanket, snow seraper, sand (to
spread for waction if you're
stuck in the snow. A fiend of
mine uses kitty fitter, which
works as weil.)

“Regular maintenance is
obviously the key to longevity
of any vehicle,” says Clark.
“And the cheapest.” A little
year-round TLC will go a long
way to ensure your car won't
let you down when the temper-
ature drops.
