22 — Wednesday, April 1, 1998 — North Shore News Dundarave neighborhood pub proposed — Robert Galster News Reporter robert@nsnews.com IF John Wiechold builds a pub, they will come. “They” are patrons and they’re turning up at his Dundarave Cafe rescaurant in steadily decreasing numbers, ' “There’s too many restaurants, too many coffee shops .. the com- petition “keeps opening up every- where,” said Wiechold. “Two or three years ago Milestones - just hoovered the whole — West Vancouver restaurant scene.” The question is will Wicchold be allowed to build it. Late fast year he received prelim- inary site and applicant approval tor a pub at his restaurant site from the B.C. Liquor Control and Licensing Board. The approval. gives Wiechold a one-year window dur- ing which he must receive approval for his proposal from the area’s res- idents and subsequently West Vancouver District council. He has embarked on the often- treacherous road of securing posi- tive public opinion for the opening of a new pub with a questionnaire he has distributed to nearby resi- dents. Of the 1,500 he sent out, _ 350 have been returned and so far the results appear positive. “The response has been just >phenomenal,” said =~ Wiechold wadding only three of those were Nagainst his proposal, “They're (opponents) phoning municipal NEWS photo Paul MeGrath DUNDARAVE Cafe owner John Wiechoid with one of the 1,500 surveys he has sent to nearby residents. The survey is aimed at testing the public’s opinion of his plan to open a pub at the restaurant site. West Vancouver Mayor Pat Boname said the issue will probably come before council in late April and will likely see councillors strike up a pub committee to study the Vancouver has a policy of only allowing one drinking establish- ment in each neighborhood. And while Horseshoe Bay, Ambleside and Park. Royal all have cheir water- does conform to the policy, it is:a kind of nice way to serve food and drink,” said Boname. Wicchold's proposal calls for transforming the current restau- borhood public house with 65 indoor seats and 20 more on the patio. His plans also call for a much ~ smaller restaurant to adjoin the pub with the remaining 35 indoor seats and 20 more outside. As a result the total number of seats at the site will remain the same. “ve talked to the churches and : they’re fine with it.” said Wiechold. > “Pve done everything T ean to lay- the groundwork. Ive talked to the police (and) city hall.” The idea of opening a pub in Dundarave is not new. In 1994, when the same space cccupied by the Dundarave Cate was owned by the Sager family, a pub application made its way to. council, It never came to fruition and was withdrawn. “My view on running a pub is irs very. difficult,” said Boname. “My concern with the Sager appli- cation was that they had no restau- vo rant experience.” She added Dundarave has changed in the 14 years since the ; ‘last application. “E think the idea of a pub is thar’. people will walk ... so there’s a pos- sibility of less traffic,” said Boname.. “The area has-been built up since ; then (1984).” : But Wicchold understands the kind of emotion a pub Proposal, can | bring out in people. : Wiechold doesn’t quite see it the same way. a “I want to consult with the pub- : lic now and I want to know. what.’ problems they perceive: with a: rant, licensed for 100 indoor seats ’ ing holes, Dundarave does not. and 40 more outside, into a neigh: | hall (father than giving the no's to “It.
