ANOTHER season of
ICBC Head Restraint
Safety Squads has
delivered a message to
motorists waiting in
ferry terminal line-ups
—a correctly adjusted
head rest may reduce

the risk of soft issue
injury (commonly
known as whiplash) in
a rear-end collision.

Berween July and
September, the Safety Squads
checked 34,721 adjustable
head restraints.

restraints can help reduce soft
tissue injuries.

Safety researchers define
proper use as adjusting the
top of the head restraint to a
height that is at least equal to
or higher than the top of the
driver’s or passenger’s cars.

In 1996, soft tissue injuries
accounted for more than 10%
of all ICBC injury claims,
costing policy holders in
excess of $500,000.

This latest effort rnarks the
third year of the Safery Squad
