Francisco; athe -Mot representative of Outraged at columnist’s views Dear Editor: I have lived in Vancouver for more than two years now, and was at first amused at Doug Collins’ ravings print- ed in your newspaper. However, I am appalled and horrified at the pure hatred, distrust, and misinformation he regulariy peddles. This isn’t inves- tigative journalism, objective argu- ment, or reasoned commentary. I am ashamed to say I am trom the same country as Mr. Collins, which has deeply institutionalized racism. But even in England, Mr. Collins would never be allowed to print his emotion- al, dangerous, and hate-inciting out- pourings against change and progress. His subtly undermining language and metaphors, out-of-context half- truths, and direct racist slurs surely are what Vancouverites . I am totally opposed to his views, Tunnel link is needed now but would have some respect for him if he dealt in facts reinforced with hard statistics and evidence. To quote Mr. Collins: “The decline in male births ccincides with the rise of feminism, starting about 1970” and “there are few men leit in the Armed Forces.” Could we have statistically significant data set in a context of objective inves- tigation to confirm these puzzling statements? His latest sermon on the “bitch culture” and “teminazis” made me finally despair. Look at the employ- ment and salary statistics, Mr. Collins, to rate where women stand in Canada, let along the rest of the world. We are not “ladies,” “bitches,” or “bra-burn- ing lesbians,” but women working alongside men for justice, peace, and prosperity. Moreover, Mr. Collins’ slanderous attacks on non-English ethnic groups, peace groups, gun-control lobbyists, and politicians seem driven by deep- seated fears and pure hatred. His defence of soldiers in their right to rape and torture because “these things happen in war” is unfor- givable. Does he include his wife, daughters, and the women of B.C. in this “counselling service” for dis- tressed soldiers? | wonder what some “real” soldiers would think about that interpretation of their job. Have you ever been raped or sexually harassed, Mr. Collins? Before making judg- ments, walk in someone else's shocs and appreciate their view of the world. The days of the white, English- speaking male with a God-given right to be superior are long over. It doesn’t matter what gender, color, creed we are as long as we all cooperate and live together to stimulate growth, share prosperity, and prepare a viable future for all our children. Mr. Collins’ silly posturings are an anachronism in 1997, so maybe he should retire gracefully to do what elderly men do, and give up his col- umn space to a “real” journalist who mzy produce informed, thought-pro- voking, and investigative commen- taries, which is, I thought, one of the prime objectives of newspa In the meantime, I no longer wish to receive the North Shore News as I do not care to be exposed to his invec- tive any longer, and urge other think- in ople who are, no doubt, equail offended, to refiise delivery. mm Freedom of the press implies responsibilities and moral standards; a newspaper should not be a forum for Mr. Collins’ personal fears and hatreds. ‘ Veronica Muir Ph.D Vancouver Tolis are the way to G ~ Dear Edito Burrard Trler’ 's two bridge crossings will always be preg- nant with problems until a third crossing relieves the ever- growing transit need. A jal third crosne is essential and any pro to clutter up Stanley’ Park with traffic and tunnels to choke Georgis Street must be reject- ed. The bridge to connect Prince Edward Island to the mainland will be completed in ' 1997 to serve a lesser popula- tion than that of. the present North Shore. Whistler, Sechelt and ferry traffic add to the need for a really long-term solution on Burrard Inlet. The only way to serve and solve this transportation prob- lem is by a tunnel crossing for road and SkyTrain. Financial assistance for the project comes from the small island built from the tunnel material. A large section of public opinion is appalled by the belated proposals from the provincial ministry to “renew” the Lions Gate Bridge. This Roll Out Your HAR for $15 RANTEED We're so confident that advertising in the North proposal would waste time and money and spoil Stanley Park with a tunnel througt.- way to choke Georgia Street daily and permanently. The three North Shore municipalities have been silent on this urgent matter for fear of being required to partici- pate financially. They are avoiding their duty by not speaking up for service to the citizens and businesses they represent. Derrick Humphreys West Vancouver | Asa former West Vancouverite, and now.a Torontonian ° about to use the country’s first clectronic toll road, the new: 407, I must say that the fairest method of paying for roads is a toll. Tolls are the only way to make sure that those’ who bene! fit from the road pay directly for it. However, those using the bridge regularly should have a greater say in its construction. Adding one lane seems silly. It : should be expanded to three lanes each way at least if it’s going to be done at all, with protected sidewalks and bike’ lan cS. Tim G.
