on ek pte nt Dear Editor: Question: What does North Vancouver District Council have in common with our beloved NDP government in Victoria? Answer: Neither of them can understand the meaning of the word “no.” Just as our financially and morally bankrupt provincial government 1s determined to ignore public opinion by foist- ing an unwanted new mega-casino on us, the impoverished district is determined to annex the assets of the city, with or without our consent. Financially the city has nothing to gain and everything to lose from a merger with our less- favored neighbors. More importantly, when it comes to local government, smaller is definitely better. In a compact city of 40,000 every councillor knows (or should know) every neighborhood and coun- cis decisions should reflect that knowledge. My neighborhood of Lower Lonsdale _ has about 10% of the city’s population so our cur- rent council can’t afford to ignore the residents” views when considering the large-scale develop- ment plans of the next 10 years.. On the other hand, with only about 3% of the population of both North Vancouvers, Lower Lonsdale would be at: the mercy of a council] dominated by a pack of greedy, imperial- istic Lynn Valley Fat-Cats who would feel safe in ignoring, the neighbor- hood’s needs. Will the city's voters say “yes” to a merger with the district? Only if they want to subsidize and stabilize tax rates in Lynn Valley and Deep Cove by turn- ing Lower Lonsdale into Metrotown North. ' There’s about as much chance of the city voting “yes” as there is of Doug Collins inviting Svend Robinson over to his house for Christmas dinner. Whar part of the word “no” does North Vancouver District Council find so difficult to understand? Inn Michaud North Vancouver New Location #2-2435 Marine Drive West Vancouver 922-3014 Escalator encounter weekend, I encountered young children plaving on escalators at two North Shore shopping cent The first ome, J just shuddered with the thought of the potential danger. The second time, at Park Royal on Sunday, I was coming down a crowded escalator. Suddenly, a young boy of approximately five vears, began trying to run back up the escalator. Horritied that no one seemed to be attending him and having seen a child maimed vears ago doing the same thing, I velled eur, “No playing on the escalator.” The child ignored me and soon fell. He couldn’t get up dut FE soon got to him and scooped him to his teet. The child immediate- ly ran to a woman who was well ahead and off the escalator. As I walked away, a man approached me and said, “Are you security?” “No,” | replied. “I just didn’t want to sce the child hurt. There is no playing allowed on the escalator.” The mother was now standing beside the man and said, “We'll remember that next time.” The man never said another word. He just stared. Neither thanked me. Another man, who was behind us on the escalator said to the person who appeared to be the father, “Hey, that was totally innocent. She didn’t do anything.” The man just stared at him too. Not knowing what to say or how to feel, I started to walk away and as | did, I overheard the mother say to the child “See what you’ve done. You've just ruined that lady’s day ... T couldn’: believe what I had just heard. If that child's leg, finger, hand or foot had got caught in the escalator, a lor more than my day would have been ruined. T would also like the mother to know that her child’s behavior did not ruin my day but his mom and dad’s attitude really disappointed me. We license peaple to drive automobiles. This is absolutely outra- geous. The citizens of Vancouver and British Columbia do not pay taxes for the police to be out busting people and throwing them in jail while teenagers with hand- guns are out robbing jewelry stores. No one in the Harm Reduction Club did anything to deserve arrest; they don't go out shooting people or robbing places. They sit in a house and smoke weed. An offence, yes. Acrime, nv. T am getting sick and tired or people fik vid Malmo- Levine going to jai! because Rings from $500 head puts up a ior less res tance to arrest than a gun-tot- ing teenager would. { think that the Vancouver Police should focus their efforts on controlling the crime in the city, rather than bothering innocent people.
