8 - Wednesday, August 10, 1994 - North Shore News MAL AER, LBOX O.J. case really about violence between sexes Dear Editor: While many people, especially in the ULS.A., are talking about the “tragedy of OJ, Simpson's life,” we need to remember that their fallen idol, like the rest of us, is simply a human being -- his status is sec- ondary. As such, minus all the hype, he is aman, a father, and was a hus- band, Like some men he was an abusive husband, The ical tragedy in this particular story is Micole Simpson and her now motherless children, We also need to remember the tragedy of her friend Ronald Goldman. They are both dead. They had no choice in the matter. The murderer did have the choice — to kil or not to kill. Time will tell if O.J. Simpson is the murderer. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. What we do know at present is that he was an abusive husband, and Nicole had been battered in the past. Those of us who work with bat- tered women know only tco well that women are most at risk when they leave an abusive relationship and/or say “the relationship is over.” Abuse and violence towards women knows no boundaries — rich, poor, educated, uneducated, all ethnic backgrounds, fantaus and the not fanious. OJ. Simpson may have toppled from his pedestal, but remember the greater tragedy --- the tragedy of Nicole Simpson's life and do what you can personally in any way pos- sible to stop the violence towards women. You may want lo support your local shelter for battered women and their children as your part in ending the violence, Emily Murphy House is nearing the end of a capital fundraising campaign to expand our 10-bed facility to 18 beds and to make it wheelchair accessible. Al present we turn away two people who are fleeing from their abusive relationships for every one we can shelter. We still need $150,000 to complete our project and be ready for operation by the end of the year.
