patients as Dear Editor: This is to the doctors who have “opted out” of the Medical Ser- vices Plan of B.C. You are deliberately using the people of B.C. as pawns in your negotiations with the government. A result is that people are now fearful of you and your actions both at billing time and on the operating table. I know of people who are postponing or cancelling needed medical treatment because they are elderly, afraid and do not un- derstand what you're doing (who does?). It may well be that the govern- ment is incompetent or unfairly dealing with you, but you have disgraced yourselves by opting out and extra billing. Poor, fixed-income elderly people who thought they had medical coverage are now in the position of putting aside their pride and dignity and humbly dealing -with you by signing powers of attorney (which is a highly questionable practice) to give you the right to bill the Med- ical Services Plan, and then pay- ing you the extra amount you think you are worth, {f you are not happy with your lot in life then good luck with your negotiations with the gov- ernment, Or good luck in the new oc- cupations of your choice. Or good Juck when you move to locations where you think you can make more money. In the meantime, stop taking Only in Canada, they say! Dear Editor: The great “national mass media party”? has all bue crowned Kim Campbell the new prime minister. instead of collectively realizing that another four years of Con- servative rule is both unfair and undeserved, they have all but created Campbellmania and made the next (September?!) election a mere formality. It is, needless to say, highly frustrating and incredible to imag- ine the Tories achieving an undeserved victory at the polls, but the mass media does play an enormous role in all this with the help of: modern technology, ame “a story is a story is a story,’’ the saying goes, regardless of its socio-political consequences. If the phenomenon .of Camp- bellmania gains momentum, it is possible it might not be stoppable. They may have just given her all the free publicity she needs. More free trade, more GST, more restraint, fewer and fewer transfer. payments, more failed initiatives and other Conservative policies are not something | relish experiencing for another four years, Campbellmania may pick up steam and go totally against the grain even when our neighbors to the south and other countries are starting to move back to the cen- tre after 12 years of ‘Reagan-cra conservatism.
