THE ANNUAL Thanksgiving Day celebration draws
upon three traditions: European peasant societies mark-
ed the fall harvest with a celebration; formal obser-
vances of giving thanks, such as that celebrated by the
explorer Martin Frobisker in the eastern Arctic in 1578
— the first North American Thanksgiving; and the

pilgrims’ celebration of

their first harvest in

Massachusetts (1621), marking the inaugural appearance
of turkey, squash and pumpkin on the dinner table.

The Canadian Pavliament declared Nov. 6 as a day of
Thanksgiving in 1879, to be celebrated as 2 national,
rather than 2 religious, holiday. It was not until Jan. 31,
1957, that Parliament 2nnounced that Thanksgiving
would be observed on the second Monday of October. -
