Large delegation heads for games A CONTINGENT of 53 North Shore firefighters and police of- ficers are preparing for the fourth World Police and Fire Games to be ‘eld in Memphis, Tennessee, June 22-30. By Elizabeth Collings News Reporter These athletes will compete in 19 events including sports ranging from tennis, rugby and horse shoes to body building, the triathlon, and the ‘‘toughest com- petitor alive’’ competition. A total of 47 evencs will be held. The Narth Shore competitors will be joining 313 competitors from throughout B.C. — the se- cond largest group attending the games, according to Larry Reda, a retired firefighier who is chairman of the North Shore Police and Fire Games committee. Reda says bis committee plans to register as a non-profit society so that fundraising activities can continue for the 1993 games in Colorado and the 1995 games in Australia. “Obviously, its important to have an organization formed to keep the fundraising going,’’ he says. Held in Vancouver, the 1989 Woarld Police and Fire Games at- tracted 6,800 competitors from 24 countries and thousands of spec- tators. Reda says at least 5,000 athletes will compete in Memphis. At the 1989 World Police and Fire Games, 108 North Shore competitors won a total of 39 medals including three gold, 22 silver and 14 bronze. This year North Vancouver city firefighter Paul Granger has been selected to carry the B.C. flag into the opening ceremonies. Granger will be defending his gold medal in the open division for triathletes. The North Shore soccer team is also going to have another run at the gold medal. At the Vancouver games, the team had to settie for a silver medal after it was defeated by the Netherlands.
