24 — Wednesday, April 4, 1990 - Film North Shore News Breaking In will keep you laughing Breaking In **% (HBO Home Video) Rated M hen Ernie (Burt Reynolds) breaks into a house, the last thing he expects to find is another house breaker. Mike (Casey Siemasko), however, is only sneaking in to short-sheet the beds. Maybe Ernie needs a partner or perhaps he’s just lonely. At any rate, he begins to teach a new dog some old tricks. And being let in on the tricks of the trade in director Bill Forsyth‘s latest film is half the fun. Reynolds flexes some long unused acting muscles as the cool, methodical sufecracker who is also oddly paternalistic. The good ol’ boy mugging is gone and in its place is a thoughtful, well-rounded per- formance. Siemasko is a likable innocent in a role that could have film review been simply unbelievable. (He naively thinks his ‘date’ is friend- ly, not realizing she’s a hooker.) This is a small film and, like For- syth’s others (Local Hero, Comfort and Joy), it shares the same warm, gentle humor. Paperhouse *** (Vestron Home Video) Rated Mature There's little warmth and gentleness in Anna’s dream world. The feverish girl (Charlotte Burke) draws a house on paper and finds it has come to life in her vivid dreams. When she adds a sad- faced boy in the window, she finds Marc (Elliot Spears) waiting for her inside, He can't walk (she forgot to draw legs), but she forges a close ,Handmaid’s Tale, relationship with the morose boy. Aana discovers her doctor is treating a seriously ill boy named Marc and that somehow her fan- tasies are linked with the ebb and flow of his health. Lurking on the fringe of her sketch is her distant father (Ben Cross). Confused by the adult world, she has turned him into a blindly raging demon bent on the children’s destruction. First-time director Bernard Rose captures the child’s eye view of life, grappling with grown-ups, loneliness, and wild imagination. Relying on psychological chills, the film reminds us how alien a child can feel. FOrget Jason and Freddy. This is the stuff from which nightmares are woven. Le Petit Amour (a.k.a. Kung Fu Master) *** (Prism Home Video) Rated Mature This French film (English subti- tles) shows how some kids can haunt adults. Jane Birken stars as a 40-year-old who falls for a charm- ing boy of 15. She knows her af- fection might be a misplaced maternal instinct (a substitute for the son she never had?2), but she can’t help herself. Although it looks sordid on paper, the boy is hardly fresh from the cradle. In fact, the only one who suffers from the affair is the woman NORTH SHORE VIEWS West Van Odeon: My Left Foot, Born on the Fourth of July GREAT LIVE ENTERTAINMENT EVERY THURS.-SAT.
