some autos are stolen for personal
gain, (sale or sale parts), the ma-
jority are stolen for other reasons.

Some stolen automobiles are us-
ed in the commission of other of-
fences (robbery, burglary), but in
the majority of cases, they are
stolen for transportation.

In addition, your vehicle could
be heavily damaged or destroyed in
an accident. Although insured, the
monies allowed for your vehicle
may not allow you to obtain a new
vehicle without an additional cash
burden.

The following guidelines are
designed to prevent you and your
vehicle from parting company:

© When parking your vehicle (at
shopping malls, at home), always
lock it and take the key with you.

@ Never leave your vehicle
unlocked and running. (This is
common practice while people pop
into convenience stores. Remember
that auto theft is a crime of oppor-
tunity.)

° If your home or apartment has
a secure garage or parking facility,
use it.

¢ Park in well-lit, busy areas.
(Thieves do not like light or an
audience.)

* Consider purchasing smooth-
topped, non-flared door-locking
buttons for your car.

® Never have personal iden-
tification on your key ring. Your
name and licence number on a set
of keys would be all a thief needs
to find your vehicle and steal it.

‘Theft from Auto’ refers to the
stealing of items inside your vehi-
cle. .

This particular crime is on the
increase, primarily because the
public are not taking the necessary
steps to prevent it.

Although the loss of an item
from your vehicle is bad enough,
this crime frequently involves
damage to your vehicle. It is not
