THE VANCOUVER Food Bank is
counting on private gardeners ta
provide fresh fruit and vegetables
for those who are in need.

“This is a time when garden
items can be shared and are so very
much appreciated by those who
cannot afford them,” said Sylvia
Russell, Food Bank Executive
Director.

Among the produce she hopes
will start flowing in are onions,
tomatoes, plums and other fruit.
Lettuce, carrots, rhubarb and
other produce donated by local
green thumbs over the past few
months has becn distributed as fast
as it comes in.

Food bank officials have
reported that the Christmas in July
campaign was a great help with the
food bags of non-perishable foods
still coming in. This year many
people also decided to give a dona-
tion to buy needed food items in-
stead of filling the bags.

Russell said that demand for
food will increase as more and
more people are working at mini-
mum wage jobs.
