In the Olympic contingent announced last week, award-winning athJete Jan Bird and team-mate Peter Milkovich, both of North Vancouver, will join Canada’s field hockey squad for the Games. North Vancouver rower Bruce Ford completes the Canadian team’s local roster. Connelt heiped Canada power to a healthy victory in Davis Cup action at the University of British Columbia earlier this year. The Olympics begin Sept. 17 in Seoul, South Korea. Lawn bowlers take silver NORTH VANCOUVER lawn bowlers Bert Walker and Gerry Finley came home with a silver medal after coming within one point of winning the gold at the Canadian Lawn Bowling National Finals in Moncton, N.B., last week. Playing for British Columbia, the men’s pairs duo took on PEI in the final, playing to an 18-17 final with the Maritimes pair winn- ing. Saskatchewan was third in men’s pairs play. Though sporting an excellent playing record leading up to the national finals, North Vancouver’s Nell Hunter finished in a disappointing tie for seventh spot in women’s singles. Next for the local bowlers is The Gold Medallion Tournament Labour Day weekend at the Vancouver South Lawn Bowling Club, where Finley will team with Peter Fish in the men’s pairs. Sasquatches quash opposition FOR THE second year in a row, the Cypress Bowl Sasquatches have won the West Coast Ski Areas Slow-Pitch Tournament, topp- ing five other mixed teams. Facing Grouse Mountain in the final, the Sasquatches won 12-8. Whistler Mountain won MVP awards in both men’s and women’s categories. Rounding out the tournament roster in vying for top spots was BC Parks. Proceeds from a tournament beer garden will be donated to the Cancer Society. Rowers paddle to Sth spot ROWERS CAM Andrews and Tom Mitchell of West Vancouver helped Canada to an eighth-place world finish at the World Junior and Lightweight Championships in Milan, Italy, recently. **We had to work really hard, and it was really rewarding,”* said Andrews, 18, who with the other members of the crew put in two straight months of training preparing for the competition. ‘“We were hoping to be in the top four, but the other crews were a lot bigger and stronger than we anticipated.’ Racing in the petite final to determine seventh- to 12th-place fin- ishers, the Canadian cox four crew clocked a time that would have put them in fifth place had they been rowing in the grand final. “Our consistency wasn’t as pood as that of the Russians and Czechs, so we could have done better,"’ said Andrews, who plans to continue his rowing career at UVic this fall.
