10 - Wednesday, September 16, 1987 - North Shore News INSERVICE NEEDED ore computer projects urged for N. Van school COMPUTER application in North Vancouver schools is pretty well ‘fon line’? with the recommendations of the Provincial Advisory Committce on Computers, according to district computer consultant Stewart Lynch. Lynch quoted from the July 1987) report of the provincial committee in his status report on computers to the Sept. 8 North Vancouver School Board meeting. North Vancouver District spent over $700,000 in May on 383 Macintosh Apple conmiputers for 11 local elementary schools and six secondary schools. These were ad- ded to the inventory of computers acquired over the years starting in 1974, “But thi. is just the beginning,”” Lynch said. “An ongoing amount of money should be directed toward computer projects, up- dating and inservice."" For instance, the provincial report recommended there be three computer labs (collections of 15-20 computers) in each secondary school. Afl but one North Van secondary school has two such labs, Inservice, familiarizing the teachers with the computers and software, began in May and June, when 280 teachers attended Apple workshops. The teachers also used the district computers af home over the summer. “We're concerned that teachers should be driving computers, not computers driving tcachers,’’ commented North Van Teachers Associatian president Andy Krawzyk. “Thanks to the ease of applica- tion of the Apples, teachers are re- ally getting a handle on their use,”’ CURTIS Cuntetnaing Writer Lyneh said. The district's philosophy with regards to computers abo jibes with the provincial committee's objective to provide all students with the opportunity to learn through, with and about com- puters. So in addition to instruc- tion in computer programming, computers are also being used to S help students improve writing, business and other skills. Computers can afso be applied fo special education programs, ca- reer preparation, industrial educa- don and library systems —- as well as 10 assists teachers with ad- ministrative and other tasks. “When will the Apple lab be obsolete?" school trustee Walton asked Lynch. “There's no telling when,” the consultant's reply. Walton suggested that families of students be invited to add their own orders to subsequent pur- chases of computers for the district so us to get a better price for all concerned, wa PASTA PASTA PASTA SAUCE SAUCE SAUCE HOMEMADE DAILY EAT IN or TAKE OUT Special Orders for Special Occasions with European Flavour MILICA’S PASTA SHOP 922-5084 , PEC BREAKFAST $2.79 (to 14:30 am) Build your own Mountain.
