10 - Wednesday, April 8, 1987 - North Shore News Operation Eyesight founder passes away A WEST Vancouver man who dedicated his life to providing Third World poor with the gift of eyesight died Monday night at the age of 81. Dr. Ben Gullison founded Operation Eyesight Universal (OEU) in 1963 in Calgary after a group of area businessmen backed his worldwide appeal for financial assistance to perform eye opera- tions in destitute Third World countries, Dr. Gullison began his medical career in 1933 in Sompeta, India at the 125-bed Argoya Varam Hospi- tal. His work there was initially general practice but the rampant eye discase among the area’s poor forced him to concentrate on eye operations. In the past 40 years, over 120,000 blind eyes have been given sight by the hospital’s staff. Dr. Gullison’s work, backed with the financial support of the OEU and its charitable donations, has since spread to over 60 eye centres in 17 countries that perform 70,000 sight restoring operations annual- ly. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 1980. i) for) Ww oO — i) oO nn jor) © @ bah rt) pI x. a ~ ot ] fc) ct = ie) = S ~ oS Sy S Se a = = = > o a & s SdIYOSSAHDOV SVAdI LATO 000$ AO T0OG TOANOOUB A Yytop yoosy v sling, 2 vadQ 9999-986 UOPLIQUag 7B AC OULIRIW ZZ fSu15 uirydou *sUHYDPLL V4 Has ‘asomyoo2 saddo> & Bsjaaym cis ee A memorial service for Dr. Gullison will take place Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 969 Burrard St., Van- DR.
