Computerized drivers test to be developed

INTERNATIONAL TEST Corp.
of Vancouver will receive a
$107,004 contribution from the
federal government to develop a
computerized drivers license testing
program which will replace the
present pencil and paper tests.

Using a computer controlled
video disc with touch screen to
present behind-the-wheel situations
and a microcomputer to score and
collect data, results will be
reported through computer graph-
ics.

Announcement of the funding
was made by Pat Carney, Minister
for International Trade and Van-
couver-Centre MP on behalf of
Bernard Valcourt, Minister of
State (Small Businesses and
Tourism).

“This proposed testing system is
unique because no other system
uses touch screens or video disc
players,’’ said Carney. *‘The new
product could have enormous ex-
port sales potential.’’

Testing will be done using a

complex mathematical technique
based on Latent Trait Theory.
Developed for the U.S. Navy at
the University of Tennessee, La-
tent Trait Theory is a method of
estimating an individual’s level of
competence by analyzing responses
to test items.

It is the response to questions
that determines which question will
be asked next, rather than having a
pre-programmed test where ques-
tions are selected at random or are
answered sequentially. As a result

competence can be determined in
the shortest possible time frame.

The company anticipates that
the new system will achieve the
same accuracy of measurement as
a test where a fixed set of items are
used with only 25 per cent as many
items being asked.

Parallel tests using different
items will be created automatically
by the system. This means that an
individual can be given the test
several times but never get the
same item twice.

Total costs of the project are
estimated at $321,336. One
research and development job is
expected to be created and 16 jobs
are anticipated by the third year of
commercial production. The com-
pany expects to have the research
and development completed by the
summer of 1988,

This federal incentive is being
provided under the Industrial and
Regional Development Program
URDP).
