‘GROSSLY UNSATISFIED’
Expo visitor from Florida

disappointed with ResWest

Dear Editor:

The front page article June 22
was very apropos, as regards my
situation.

lam visiting the Vancouver area
and attending the annual meeting
of the Canadian Ophthalmological
Society.

Two months ago | made ar-
rangements through ResWest with
Anson Enterprises for accom-
modations for two for June 20 to
25 specifying that 1 needed car
space. | paid the entire amount as
demanded of $1,027.20. No <on-
firmation despite request.

When I arrived I was sent to
1033 Haro Street where I found no
space for my car, only street park-
ing meters, all occupied.

In the apartment bare walls, and
floor, no phone for receiving or
sending communications (public
phone in Hotel Meridian nearby),
no customary appurtenancies and

Dear Editor:

Much has been said and written
about the ‘‘Great Shingle and
Shake Debacle,’’ but for reasons
not yet explained no one seems to
be able to come out and declare
that there is a great lesson to learn
here.

We are so inundated with sales
seminars, management sym-
posiums and the like, it would ap-
pear that basic good business pro-
cedures are being covered over, or
perhaps, considered too oid-
fashioned.

I do not know the shake and
shingle business but 1 do know
susiness. There are a few fun-
damental concepts that have
withstood the test of time and
must apply in any venture, be i:
lumber or the manufacture cf
potato chips.

The first rule for survival is
never, never, never put all your
eggs in one basket. To let one cus-
tomer take your full production,
indeed your very being (as the
Shingle Boys have done with the
U.S.) is foolhardy at best and must
be considered tantamount to living
in a fool’s paradise.

When this condition exists, one
finds oneself at the mercy of your
one and only customer, and when
he wishes to move in another
direction, which is his democratic
right, you are left holding all your
product. Not a customer in sight.
They probably gave up on you
long ago.

Times change and people
change, that’s the way of the
world. The continued development
of new customers as part of every-
day good business practice must be
the norm.

No wonder the industry has the
‘shakes’, Lord help ‘em if they
should ever get the ‘‘shingles, they
hurt.

I have friends here, and visiting
associates, with whom | must have
means of communication, so | left
the next morning to accept an of-
fer of use of a friend's house.

I called Anson that morning ex-
plaining the grossly unsatisfactory
conditions provided and was told
that there would be no refund as |
had not made application five
weeks in advance! 1 wonder if this

bam, of course, informing my
travel agent so they will not book
any more of their clientele through
ResWest or particularly Anson
Emterprises, We came out here
from Toronto on a lovely VIA
train tour.

1 do hope this situation can be
widely publicized to stop this type
of treatment of visitors to the area
which is so beautiful.
