HOLIDAY SAFETY Turn on and THE BRITISH Columbia Automobile Association will light the way to improved highway. safe- ty this Canada Day weekend, ard throughout the summer. The auto club plans a ‘‘Turn on and Live’’ lights on campaign for the. Canada Day, B.C. Day and Labor Day holiday weekends. Drivers will be encouraged to drive with their headlights on at ali times in order to improve their _ Visibility, and thus help prevent accidents explains Andrew Makin, President of BCAA. “The safety community has long been aware that driving with headlights on. is one of the most cost-effective and readily available means of increasing driving safe- ty,’’ Makin said. * Studies conducted by Transport Canada bear out the findings of researchers in other countries where daytime running lights or daytime headlights are com- pulsory. live “While headlights during the day don’t significantly increase the driver’s ability to see, it makes one’s vehicle much more visible to oncoming traffic. When an automobile is itself a source of light it can be seen from farther away in all weather conditions,”’ Makin said. The daytime use of headlights is a proven safety measure that has the support of ICBC, B.C. Tran- sit, the Insurance Bureau of Canada, and the B.C. Optometric Association, among others. Makin cautioned that it is low beam headlights that are recom- mended in BCAA’s Turn On and Live campaign. ‘“‘There is an unfortunate tendency for some people to think that if some light is good, more is better. This is not the case. High beam headlights during the day are just as inconsiderate, dangerous: and ilegal in the face of oncoming traffic as they are at night,’’ the auto club president said.
