A7 - Wednesday, October 26, 1983 - North Shore News ‘Preventive’ services questione Dear Editor: Your editorial ‘‘Cutback Logic’’ (Oct 16) pretends that the government must cut preventative services because ‘‘virtually every government service is ‘‘preventative’’ and the only alternative is ‘‘no cuts ANYWHERE?’’ The News must consider as ‘‘preventative’’ mega- projects, highways, BC’s Ex- po, jobs for relatives, public sector salaries for personal political advisors, travel ex- penses for cabinet members to travel (eg. to China) etc. Such expenditures do ‘‘prevent’’ Socred cabinet friends and supporters from having to work harder, since they can feed at the public trough they abhor or grab easy land speculation profits. Unfortunately none of the stimulation of the private sec- tor has given employers the inclination to create jobs as Bennett wipes out others. D.S. Maas North Vancouver (We suggest job-intensive capital projects like northeast coal, ALRT, Expo and highways are all ‘‘preven- tative’’ in the sense that they are designed to boost the long term economy of the pro- vince and thus help ‘‘pre- vent’’ a return to recession — ED.) Cutback supporters hallenge Dear Editor: I'd like to throw out a challenge to all those who have total approval for the Socred’s present repressive package of Bulls For instance, would you, who are clapping Big Brother Bill on the back for cutting a much needed $50 a month from the 2,500) disabled (mentally or physically, or both) person's now pitifully inadequie government grant on an average of $530 per month, be willing to take a proportionate cut of $500 oF $1,000 of more a month from your own secure salary with its assured cost of living tn crease, annual tnctcase. ctc ? Lvery much doubtat' In fact, f think the back clapping would abruptly cease, to be replaced by same very complaining And you Mi: Bennett, why aren't you setting a good cxample and applying some of your restrictive measures to yourself, and to all those toud who can well afford to give upsome of theth many many benefits? An orchard was part of that farm. Eventually the land was sold for development and about twenty-five years ago an apartment building was constructed on part of the site. A Gravenstein apple tree which stood in the north-west corner of the property surviv- ed the construction. Although it was never pruned Or sprayed it didn’t give up its Struggle to go on living. Each spring, despite its lack of care and its great age, it miraculously put forth a glorious display of pink and white blossomes. Van trustees Dear Editor: With reference to the letter in the Sunday News of Oc- tober 23 from the Chairman of the North Vancouver Schoolboard, | must admit to being puzzled by some of the Statements made and con- sider them to be somewhat misleading. Chairman Joe appears to claim that in the projected 1984 to 1986 schoolboard budgets ‘‘the $8.3 million reduction does not allow for declining enrol- ment’’. This statement is not true as, in the schoolboard agenda for September 13, 1983, Table 64 in Schedule C4 cleary states that for the future budgets ‘‘projections for 1985 and 1986 are calculated using projected enrolments’’. The proposed budget for 1984 uses a total enrolment of 15,287 pupils and at a per pupil cost of $3,469, shows an _ increase over the 1982 and 1983 costs which were $3,428 and $3,451 respectively. The recent statements by the Schoolboard Chairman and his Trustees about budget cuts are irresponsible and amount to scare tactics. They are being used in an at- tempt to malign the provin- cial government and to hide the board’s own inability to manage. Ernie W. Sarsfield North Vancouver draperies by S. Laursen Custom Draperies. Certainly there was the occasional worm in the apple but the texture and flavour of the fruit were unique and un- dimished by the presence of the tenant.
