Unfor- tunately, the pro-choice vs. anti-choice question § con- Study the information on abortion Dear Editor: It was interesting to read the answers given to the In- quiring Reporter’s question “What are your views on abortion?” (N.S. News, June 8) This is a question that has repercussions in just about all areas of our lives, whether looking for a family doctor, wondering what is taught in schools, why our population is not even replacing itself, where are the young people to be the support for our ever growing number of retired workers, and is it right to be taxed up- ward of $6,000,000 a year in B.C. for this elective surgery? These are social questions and not as important as the personal ones — the 12 year old pregnant girl, rape and incest — is it true that abor- tion in these cases can leave far greater physical and psychological damage than by giving tender loving care for the nine months, and br- inging a baby and joy to childless couples who now must wait years to adopt? And on a deeper level again, who can say which human life is expendable and who should be involved in the taking of it? And the rights of the unborn? The most basic mght would be the mght to keep the hfe he/she already enjoys. For more information ask at our public libraries for “New Perspectives on Abor hon” and “Abortion and Social Justice”, and the North Shore ProLife Society has a good lending library in their office which is near Lonsdale and West 15th St. F Danicl North Vancouver tinues to be an issue and threatens to disrupt a hard- working, functioning board. Section 251 of | the Criminal Code of Canada States that a legal therapeutic abortion can be performed in an accredited or approved hospital. Hospital board elections should not become the plat- form for groups who wish to change a federal law. However, the reality is that a Single-issue group continues to make its anti-choice stance their sole reason for nominating candidates to the board. Those of us who believe that abortion is not always the right answer, BUT know from statistics and research that unwanted children are very often abused and neglected, and that in the past, many desperate preg- nant women endangered their lives to secure illegal abortions, will come out to the hospital elections and vote for those candidates who support freedom of choice. New members of the Hospital Society must join before August 7 in order to vote in the September meeting. A 1982 Gallup poll show- ed that 72% of Canadians surveyed felt that abortion should be a decision made by a woman and her physi- cian. The North Shore Association for Choice on Abortion (NSACA) is an in- dependent group of citizens from the North Shore whose purpose is to ensure the con- tinued availability of therapeutic abortions at Lions Gate Hospital. The Association has been revived to respond again to those groups who wish to remove people’s right to choose. If you wish to send a donation to help with printing and mailing costs for NSACA or to donate time to the groups, send them to NSACA, c/o North Shore Women's Cen- tre, 600 W. The International Association of Medical Assistance to Travellers is a non-profit organization established “to provide world wide medical assistance to travellers who, while absent from their home country, may find themselves in need of medical or surgical care or of any form of medical treat- ment by providing these travellers with the names of centres in countries other than that to which they are native, the names of locally licensed medical practioners who have command of the native language spoken by the traveller and who agree to a stated and standard list of medical fees for their ser- vices” and to provide moral support. “A traveller who may need the care of a doctor in Rome, Haifa or Osaka will feel as if he is being treated by his own family doctor” in the words of Dr. V. Mar- colongo, who established the LAMAT in 1960 to unify and coordinate doctors world- wide to assist travellers who might require assistance. The Association provides a pocket-size directory listing centres from Algeria to Zaire (thirty-two in Italy where Barbara's correspon- dent had difficulty finding an English speaking health pro- fessional). It also provides world charts for immuniza- tion, malaria risk and climate. IAMAT exists on volun- tary contributions. Member- ship and directory are free. ?
