C13 - Wednesday, June 15, 1983 - North Shore News HE entertainment Vancouver's first Jessie Awards a success BEST ACTOR goes to Jackson Davies for an outstanding comic per- formance, albeit mostly ad lib, at Sunday’s First Annual Jessie Awards. Named after Jessie Richardson, a strong, sup- portive member of Van- couver theatre for many years, the awards are Van- couver’s answer to Tony. Davies, to the probable horror of the scriptwriter and the occasional embar- rassment of co-host Pia Shandel-Southam, brought an irreverant hilarity to the bombastic sentimentality of most of the evening's pro- ceedings. And Shandel-Southam deserves best supporting ac- tress for being able to follow the erratic pace set by Davies. As various local luminaries presented lovely free-form sculptures created by North Shore sculptor Carl Merten, the audience clap- ped and cheered in celebra- tion of the thriving local theatre scene, crowding the Arts Club at Granville Island. Winners of the evening were Blood Relations which won best production of a play, best director (Larry Lilo) and best lighting design (Marsha Sibdthorpe), and Reflections on Crooked Walking, Ann Mortifee’s musical fantasy, which won best production of a musical, best supporting actor (Simon Webb) and best costume design (Marti Wright).
