lron Horse takes coaches championship

Perennial coaches’ league
champions Iron Horse
(formerly the Old-Timers)
did the double once again
Sunday when they captured
the Olympia Cup for winning
the post-season tournament
after having already finished
atop the league standings
during the regular season,
thereby retaining the Kilbey
Cup, emblematic of league
supremacy.

’ The road to the trophy
wasn't a smooth one,

however, as the winners
faced a severe test of their
character in their semi-final
match at 9:00 a.m. in
conditions that ranged from
light rain to a driving hail-
storm at Inter-river Park.
Iron Horse and their
opponents Lynnwood Hotel
(also league runners-up) had
split their previous two
tournament meetings, so an
exciting game was an-
ticipated and the two teams
didn’t disappoint the

spectators who braved the
elements. ‘
Lynnwood jumped out to
a quick 2-0 lead as first Steve
Watkins breaking in from
the right wing in the second
minute and then Rob Boyd
from a goal-mouth scramble
in the eighth minute scored
goals. Play see-sawed back
and forth until the twenty-
fourth minute when Tony
Birrel notched his first of
two goals within a minute,
the second coming when he

broke. down the right wing
and beat goal-keeper Peter
Nagy on the near-side to
knot the game at 2-2 at half-
time.

The second half was
tighter defensively with
George McLaughlin scoring
the only goal to give Iron
Horse their margin of vic-
tory, while in the other semi-
final being played at the
same time, Rick Watson
scored an early goal to give

Molsons a 1-0 win over Lynn
Valley to propel them into
the subsequent final, also
played at Inter-River.
Molsons, however, proved
no match for the Iron Horse
powerhouse, although goalie
Peter Mutch held them in
the contest in the early going
as he Stopped a Joe. Girier
penalty-kick in the first ten
minutes. George

McLaughlin finally broke
through for the champions,
though, when he netted his

own rebound after cutting in
from the left wing and Peter
Phillips promptly made it 2-0
on a brilliant 30-yard blast
before half-time.

McLaughlin tallied his
third of the day on a fine
pass from Tony Birrel in the
second half and goal-keeper
Dave Shaw registered the
shut-out as Iron Horse
capped a spectacular season
with a 3-0 triumph in the Cup
Final.
