surfing schools offering basic
instruction for between $40
and $70.

Windsurfing has come a
long way since its humble
conception in California in
1967 by a surfer and a sailor.

“These two guys - Hoyle
Schweitzer and Jim Drake -
met at a Sunday afternoon
barbecue in Marin Del Rey,”
explains Labrosse. “One was
a surfer and one was a sailor
and they got together and
came up with the wind-
surfer.”

It has already matched*
skiing in Europe in dollar
value, says Winterton, and
sales in Canda this year are
expected to top $5 million.

The sport was granted 988-0173
status recently by the In-
ternational Yachting Rules
Association as a world class
sport and, to every veteran
windsu:ier’s delight, has now
been chosen as the trial sport
for the Los Angeles Summer
Olympics.

“They're still arguing over
which board they’re going to
use of all those on the
market,” says Louis Morin,
president of La Federation
jc Windsurfing du Quebec.
“But they've chosen wind-
surfing.”

For ‘long-time converts
like Winterton, who now
runs his own windsurfing
shop in Vancouver, the only
bad thing about the sport's
rampaging popularity is that
he hardly ever gets to hop on
a board himself.

But he says it is a small
price to pay for the long-
awaited spread of the sport
he loves.
