Capilano. College began’ ‘it - tenth year of operation and:a. series of special events has”. been planned. to. celebrate | ‘this first decade of service to. . the: community. - "One of these events will be an exhibition of work by instructors in the. Art. Program, to be held in the North Shore Gallery at ’ Presentation House in North Vancouver, from March 7 through March 18, ‘1979. “Reflecting t the wide variety of. studio courses offered at the college,‘ the exhibition will include examples of ‘painting, drawing, print- making, sculpture, pottery, weaving, fabrics, illustration, etc.,,and will provide ‘both public © with an unusual _ “opportunity to view some of ~ the directions taken by. the art faculty in their personal and professional roles ‘as practising artists ‘and ‘crafts- people. cm ~The works on ‘display will - reveal a broad range: of philosophical, stylistic’ and:: technical concerns but, other” - than indirectly, should not be seen as representative’ of what is- actually taught or. promoted in the Art Program. As artist-teachers those _. _who instruct in the studios at: Capilano College believe that their primary responsibility is to encourage their students to. become © independent_ creative personalities in their 7 own right. Individual modes of expression are fostered at all times. It has been stated that ‘**those who can, do — those who can’t teach"’, but it is hoped that his exhibition will demonstrate the fallacy of this claim as far as Capilano College is concerned. Instuc- tors in all Career/Vocational programs are appointed only when they have established their credibiltiy as pro- fessionals in their fields of expertise, thus ensuring that the students receive an education appropriate to the needs of to-day's society and job market. As this exhibition of recent work by the art faculty will illustrate, instructors at Capilano College do infact practice what they preach.
