District councillor Doug MacKay-Dunn, a__ former Vancouver police officer, said he was prepared to raise municipal raxes to help fund the centre if federal or provin- cial funding didn’t come through. Mackay- Dunn said it was tine for a new strategy. “Addicts recover better in their own communities,” he said, “rather than in an area where everyone is on drugs.” An Inquiring © Reporter survey in the News revealed that 71 per cent of North Shore residents backed the idea of a detox centre. The total annual operating cost for the centre is estimat- ed to be $500,000 — $300,000 of that being for detox and drug treatment costs.
