ing, playing the organ, and entertaining in her
home.

Active in her earlier years, Eric is still a balt
of energy — despite the tragic loss of her hus-
band and son. Erie believes, “Whatever you do,
do it the best you can.” This she did, as a
homemaker, volunteer, singer, athlete, and a
strict, demanding musical group leader.

Eric was born in Saskatoon in 1919. ‘This
vivacious lady was educated there, and partici-
pated in softball, basketball, speed skating and
singing. After high school, she attended busi-

Metropolitan Lite Insurance
upon graduation.

In 1945, Erie met her fiature
husband, Ken Cunningham, in
Saskatoon, They married in
1946 and moved to the North
Shore in 195], where Erie has
lived ever since, apart from six
years in ‘Toronto while Ken
was working, there.

Feeling the need to help others who were
less fortunate, Erie volunteered at Pearson
Hospital at least once a week — and some-
times twice — for 25 years. She looked after a
guadriplegic girl, age sixteen at the time.

At the Capilano Winter Club, Erie formed
a musical group called The Sweet & Sours
with 15 other curling ladies. She was the con-
ductor and lead singer, and also played a
ukulele.

She remembers being a strict conductor —
and during practice sessions they didn’t fool

boards, gutbuckets, and drums, and the
remaining number of ladies played kazoes,

They made all their own costunies, and
changed bats with cach musical number. This
swinging, colourtal 16-piece band would make
their appearance by marching onto the stage
singing When tdi Saints Come Marching In,
The group stil keeps in touch onee a month
for catfee and three times a year for a party.

In 1975 on a trip ta Hawaii, Erie, who was
a beginner at golf, jokingly asked Ken one day
whac he would buy her if she gota hole in
one. His reply? “Pi buy you any damn car you
want.” She landed a hole in one on the 16th
hole, and told Ken: “I want the big car with
the round tire-shaped formation on the back.”
She soon got hee 1975 Baby Blue Lincoln
loaded with extras! [n all her years of golfing
that was her only hole in one.
