NEIGHBOR PROFILE

WEST VANCOUVER resident Pat Battensby might not
move mountains, but she’s moved a former neighbor to
nominate her for The Villager’s first special neighbor

feature.

Battensby, 56, told The Villager
after being nominated by her
neighbor of eight years, Val
Stephenson, that she ‘‘hasn’t mov-
ed mountains.”’

do,”’ Battensby says, ‘‘but most
women are never recognized for
their contributions to their families
and to the community.”’

Stephenson thinks people should
know about her neighbor's ac-

was instrumental in getting a craft
fair started there.

At Expo 86 she worked as a
volunteer interviewing other vol-
unteers, and trained first-aid vol-
unteers during the Papal visit in
1984, .

But the nicest thing that hap-
pened to her, she says, is when a
group of friends nominated Bat-
tensby for the 1988 Women of
Distinction Award, which honors
women for their accomplishments.

“1 didn’t win, but ! did win just
by being nominated.””

While she’s. not working as a
volunteer Battensby has plenty of
hobbies to keep her busy. She en-

joys cooking, gardening, and trav-
elling. Last year she went to Israel
and to Italy to visit fainily.

She says she’s fortunate to have
good health, but what drives her is
her fove of people and her com-
munity.
