That, according to Rob Teleske, is the most striking dif- ference between junior hockey and university hockey. “In junior yourre dealing with younger kids, so the coach has to be alittle bit of a babysit- ter, bur in university (players) are treated like men,” the North Van native says. Teleske is ina good position to make such a statement, The 2)-year-old forward spent three years playing for the Merritt Centennials before enrolling in the Eniversity of British Columbia this fall. He is a freshman on the Thunderbird men’s varsity hockey squad. That team is one of four Canadian university squads that will play in the inaugural Valor Cup) Dec. 27-31 at Pacitic Coliseum, Other teams include the Saskatchewan Huskies, the McGill Redman, and the Toronto Varsity Blues (see schedule at right). “It’s the best amateur heck: ev available because the plavers are More mature than juniors,” says tournament chairman Ken Megale of university hockey. “And they have a love tor the game where they can combine that with their studies.” Ah yes, their studies. “It’s been a really big adjustment,” Teleske says of tite as a student-athlete. E's going to be a fot of work jug gling i it all.” Teleske, a Windsor grad, played his minor deague hockey at the North Shore Winter Club before moving wo the North Vancouver recreation centre's peewee program, His original plan was to land a liackey scholarship south of the border, but when that didn’t pan out trom Merritt he enrolled at the Vancouver uni- versity. “To was just looking for 3 tresh start in hockey,” the first- year Arts student explains. “[ve just taken the view that if I move on from here hockey- wise, that’s great, but [want to atleast get a really wood cduca- tion.” Tickets for the Valor Cap are available ar Ticketmaster outlets.
